American Bobsledder Triumphs in World Cup, First Win Since Motherhood

In a remarkable comeback, American bobsledder Kaillie Humphries Armbruster secured her first World Cup victory since motherhood. Competing in Sigulda, Latvia, she triumphed in the two-woman race with brakewoman Emily Renna on Sunday. This win marked her 31st two-woman World Cup victory and her 43rd overall major career win, including Olympics and world championships.

Historic Victory Amid Challenges

This victory was especially significant for Humphries Armbruster as it occurred 44 days before the Milan-Cortina Games. It ended Germany’s impressive 20-race winning streak in the two-woman event, a dominance that began with her own victory in Altenberg in January 2023.

Return to Competition

Humphries Armbruster took a break from bobsledding to start a family with her husband, Travis Armbruster, a former bobsledder. She returned to competition in December 2024 after the birth of her son, Aulden. Reflecting on her transition to motherhood, she remarked, “Becoming a mom hasn’t changed my sport approach, but I had to learn better energy management.”

Training for Olympic Aspirations

In preparation for her return, she and her coach, Stuart McMillan, developed a 17-month training plan focusing on enhancing strength and speed. Her determination is evident through her shared training routines, which include workouts with her son. “Bring on my whole family,” she stated, showcasing her commitment to balancing motherhood and athletics.

Momentum Heading to the Olympics

Following her victory, Humphries Armbruster now ranks second in the World Cup two-woman standings. Alongside her, reigning world monobob champion Kaysha Love has also excelled, winning four medals in eight races this season. Veteran bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor finished fourth in both the two-woman and monobob events, highlighting the strength of the U.S. women’s bobsled program.

Future Goals and Reflections

As Humphries Armbruster looks forward to the upcoming Olympic Games, she emphasizes that age and motherhood are not barriers to achieving greatness in sports. “I think becoming a mom has made me more resilient and focused,” she noted. “Regardless of the result in sport, I come home to a little boy who loves me unconditionally.”
