Philadelphia Prepares: Residents Stock Up as Sleet and Snow Blanket City
As winter weather descends upon Philadelphia, residents are proactively preparing for the impending storm. The city’s streets are beginning to be covered with sleet and snow, prompting an influx of shoppers. Local stores have reported a surge in demand for essential supplies.
Residents Stock Up Ahead of the Winter Storm
At Stanley’s True Value in Roxborough, shoppers rushed in to purchase salt, scrapers, and shovels. Store manager Joe Jaconski noted that customer activity was significantly higher than last year. “We’ve sold about 600 bags of the 20lb Sure Paws, which is pet-friendly ice melter,” Jaconski stated. This is a stark increase compared to just 65 bags sold in December of the previous year.
Community Precautions and Readiness
James Vallery, a Germantown resident and owner of Val’s Restaurant, was among those preparing by buying extra salt. “I own a restaurant at 2047 Green Street, so I need to ensure that no one slips and falls due to the weather,” he explained.
By early evening, a wintry mix had begun to blanket Philadelphia. In Mount Airy, city crews were deployed to spread salt along Germantown Avenue to manage icy conditions. Meanwhile, in Manayunk, Asiah Velasquez tackled snow removal at his home. “I’m trying to stay ahead of it,” he remarked, “shoveling every two hours and salting to prevent buildup.”
Traffic and Safety Measures
Officials reported several accidents as a result of the slick roads. Incidents included a collision on City Avenue in Wynnefield Heights and an overturned vehicle on Bells Mill Road in Andorra. As drivers navigated I-76 eastbound, conditions prompted PennDOT to reduce speed limits on major highways.
The City of Philadelphia assured residents of its preparedness for the winter storm. “The Streets Department is treating roadways across all neighborhoods,” officials stated. Crews are working throughout the night as precipitation continues, ensuring emergency services can operate safely. Residents are urged to limit travel and consider using public transport options like SEPTA.
