Reds Acquire JJ Bleday in Exciting Deal
The Cincinnati Reds have made a significant roster move by acquiring outfielder JJ Bleday. This development was reported by FanSided’s Robert Murray and confirmed by MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon.
Details of the Acquisition
JJ Bleday’s contract with the Reds is classified as a big league deal. The player is represented by Excel Sports Management. Bleday was originally drafted fourth overall by the Miami Marlins in 2019.
Bleday’s Performance History
Bleday seemed to have found his stride in 2024, showcasing an impressive performance. During his time with the Oakland Athletics, he posted a batting line of .243/.324/.437. He hit 20 home runs across 642 plate appearances, earning a 120 wRC+ and achieving 3.2 fWAR.
Despite his offensive success, Bleday faced challenges defensively. He received negative reviews for his defensive metrics, recording -19 Defensive Runs Saved and -3 Outs Above Average while playing center field. The expectations were high for him to continue excelling as the A’s moved to Sutter Health Park.
Struggles in 2025
Unfortunately, the 2025 season proved challenging for Bleday. He recorded a below-average 90 wRC+ with a .212/.294/.404 batting line and managed only 14 home runs over 344 plate appearances. His struggle was evident as he played in just 98 big league games and faced two demotions to Triple-A.
Statistical analysis indicated that both his barrel numbers and strikeout rate declined significantly from the previous year. Although Bleday was transitioned out of center field, his defense remained only passable in a corner outfield position.
Future with the Reds
Matt Swartz of MLBTR estimated that Bleday would earn approximately $2.2 million during his first arbitration year. In November, the Athletics decided to designate him for assignment and ultimately cut ties at the non-tender deadline.
With this acquisition, the Reds gain three years of team control over Bleday. Notably, he still has a minor league option left, allowing Cincinnati to send him back to Triple-A if needed.
As the season progresses, it will be interesting to observe how Bleday rebounds with the Reds and what strategies the team employs to maximize his potential.
