Dalles Edwin Krause Sr., a prominent figure from Hazen, North Dakota, passed away on December 24, 2025, at the age of 92. A memorial service is scheduled for December 30 at 10:00 AM CT at Peace Lutheran Church, where Pastor Walt Wolff will officiate. Burial will take place at the church’s cemetery.
Early Life and Career
Dalles was born on June 10, 1933, in Hazen to Edwin and Pauline Krause. He had a brief childhood in Beulah and Mott, North Dakota, due to his father’s work in local creameries. In 1944, Dalles’s father and grandfather purchased Krause’s Super Valu in Carson, marking the beginning of Dalles’s lifelong dedication to the grocery business.
Education and Military Service
After graduating from Carson High School in 1951, Dalles pursued higher education at Bismarck Junior College and later at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. His time in college was punctuated by a stint in the Army, including service in Korea.
Family and Business Expansion
On May 1, 1960, Dalles married Marilyn O’Connell. The couple moved to Hazen shortly after to manage their own Krause’s Super Valu. Under their leadership, the store expanded to a larger location on Central Avenue in 1982, introducing a deli, bakery, and an adjacent liquor store. Their family also grew during this time, welcoming children Karla, Kari, Kandi, and Dalles Jr., who later took on ownership roles.
Community Involvement and Legacy
Dalles was deeply committed to his community, serving in various organizations, including the Hazen Park Board, Hazen Chamber, and North Dakota Grocers Association. His contributions earned him accolades such as North Dakota Grocer of the Year and the Spirit of America Award.

Often referred to as “Big Dalles,” he was known for his quick wit and his signature response, “I’m Nice,” to inquiries about his well-being. He cherished his role as a grandfather and actively supported local youth sports.

Dalles’s faith played a significant role in his life. He passed on Christmas Eve, reinforcing the importance of faith and family values he instilled in his loved ones. He leaves behind his wife, Marilyn, and children, among others, plus ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
