Bristol Jazz Artists Revive Old Duke Pub Record for Charity

A collective of jazz musicians is bringing the rich legacy of the Old Duke pub to life with a new recording. The album, titled Jazz At The Duke Volume II, serves not only as a tribute but also as a fundraising effort for the Bristol Jazz Festival, which faced delays in 2025 due to financial challenges.

Reviving a Historic Sound

This project marks a significant milestone, as it recreates the essence of the original album produced in 1979. Many of the musicians from that first recording have returned to contribute to the new release. Andy Leggett, an artist who performed on both albums, expressed his hopes for the project. He stated, “I hope this album demonstrates the music isn’t dead and has a lot of life in it yet.” Leggett never expected a sequel would be created.

Inspiration Behind the Project

• Joe Trudgeon, a record producer and jazz musician, initiated the idea after discovering an old LP in a charity shop.
• Recognizing the names of several musicians he performs with inspired him to bring the project to fruition.
• Trudgeon remarked on the urgency of honoring the legacy of artists, noting that many from the original album are no longer alive.

Co-producer Paul Archibald echoed Trudgeon’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of the venue. He noted, “As an early jazz live music venue, this pub is among the oldest in Britain.” The Old Duke has hosted live jazz since the 1960s, making it a vital part of Bristol’s cultural heritage.

Legacy and Future Aspirations

Both Trudgeon and Archibald hope that this album will not only celebrate the musical heritage but also inspire future generations. Archibald remarked that in 40 years, someone might discover this album and consider making a third volume, provided the music endures.

The release of Jazz At The Duke Volume II is more than just a musical endeavor; it’s a heartfelt tribute that showcases the vibrancy of jazz, ensuring that its legacy continues to resonate through time.
