Fairfax Co. Reveals Candidates for House District 17 Firehouse Primary
A firehouse primary in Fairfax County, Virginia, is set to take place soon. This election is to fill the vacant seat in the 17th House of Delegates District. Candidates have been selected to compete for this important role.
Candidates for the 17th House District
The four candidates selected for the primary are:
- Russell Brooks: A retired public servant with over 20 years at the U.S. Department of State. His priorities include affordability, health care, education, and democratic defense.
- Garrett McGuire: Former chair of the Board of United Community and the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board. He aims to strengthen schools, support economic growth, and reduce family costs.
- Carla Bustillos: President of the Latino Caucus of the Democratic Party of Virginia and small-business owner. Her campaign focuses on transportation funding, federal worker protections, and local business support.
- Joy McManus: A dedicated teacher in Fairfax County and gun violence prevention advocate. She promotes affordability, public safety, and reproductive rights.
Voting Information
The firehouse primary will occur this Sunday, with voting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eligible voters can visit one of the following locations:
- Franconia Governmental Center — 6121 Franconia Road, Alexandria
- Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites Alexandria — 6421 Richmond Highway, Alexandria
- Hotel Belvoir Springfield — 6550 Loisdale Road, Springfield
Voters can also register online at the Fairfax Democrats website until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Upcoming Special Election
The winner of the firehouse primary will advance to a special election scheduled for January 20. This election was prompted by the resignation of Del. Mark Sickles. Sickles has served in the House since 2004 and will become the Commonwealth’s next secretary of finance, joining Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s cabinet.
