Sigourney Weaver Shares Unexpected Advice for Her Role in “Holes”
Sigourney Weaver recently shared how her child inspired her to take on a role in the film “Holes.” During an interview with Vanity Fair, the acclaimed actress revealed that her daughter, Shar Simpson, encouraged her to audition for the part.
Inspiration from Family
Weaver’s daughter was around eight years old when she read the book “Holes” in school. She approached Weaver with a unique suggestion. “There’s a really awful woman in my book, and you should play her,” Shar told her mother.
Weaver expressed pride in her daughter for recognizing the character’s complexity. “I think she knew I would enjoy it,” Weaver added, highlighting their close relationship.
Role of The Warden
In the film adaptation released in 2003, Sigourney Weaver portrayed the character known as The Warden. This character managed Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, where she compelled young boys to dig for treasure she believed was buried there.
Reflecting on her role, Weaver described The Warden as a “nightmare-ish” creation. She added, “What I found so unexpectedly touching about The Warden was that she had spent her childhood looking for treasure, just like the boys she was directing.”
Character Depth
Weaver noted that the Warden’s troubled background contributed to her relentless pursuit of the treasure. “She was so damaged, probably had some PTSD, that was still active in her,” Weaver explained. This layered portrayal added depth to a character often perceived as merely villainous.
Creative Collaboration
The film “Holes” was directed and produced by Andy Davis, with the screenplay written by Louis Sachar. Weaver praised the talented cast, which included Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Patricia Arquette. “It was incredible to end up in the movie with such an amazing young cast,” she said.
