A devastating fire has swept through the Pacific Palisades, leaving a significant impact on the senior communities. Currently, around 400 homes are under construction in the area, while plans for an additional 750 have gained approval. However, this figure represents only a small portion of nearly 7,000 structures that suffered damage in the blaze.

Community Resilience Amidst Rebuilding Challenges

Mayor Karen Bass expressed empathy for the affected families, noting the challenges faced throughout the year. “The Palisades community has endured an unimaginable year,” she said. “My heart breaks for every family that won’t be able to be home this holiday season.”

Current Housing Situation at Casa Gateway

Casa Gateway, a senior living facility, has recently reopened. However, only one-third of its 68 residents have returned. Rockwell, president of the homeowners’ association, highlighted ongoing issues, including mosquitoes due to standing water in the complex.

  • Standing water permeated walls, causing discomfort for residents.
  • Sandbags remain around the building as a protective measure.
  • The new lobby reflects the extensive damage from flooding and smoke.

Rockwell described the mudflow as so severe that she struggled to open her front door. Following seven months of remediation efforts, numerous repairs were made, including:

  • Removing approximately six inches of mud.
  • Replacing insulation and flooring in communal areas.
  • Fixing irrigation systems.
  • Restoring external walls and tiles.

The Eerie Landscape of Pacific Palisades

After waiting nearly seven months for repairs, Rockwell returned home to a neighborhood transformed. The once vibrant Palisades village, known for its boutiques, restaurants, and schools, now presents a stark contrast with thousands of empty lots and storefronts. “It’s just so dark,” she remarked, reflecting on the haunting changes to her community.

The path to recovery remains slow, but the residents of Pacific Palisades exhibit determination to rebuild and restore their cherished neighborhood.
