In the final weekend of 2025, Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” dominated the box office, reaffirming its status as a major blockbuster. The film, part of the long-running “Avatar” franchise directed by James Cameron, grossed an impressive $64 million in the domestic market from Friday to Sunday. Internationally, it added approximately $181.2 million, bringing its total global earnings to $760.4 million.

Box Office Performance

“Fire and Ash” is now recognized as the sixth highest-grossing film worldwide this year. In just ten days, it surpassed other big releases, including Warner Bros.’ “Superman” and Sony’s “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.” The franchise continues to captivate audiences with its stunning visual effects, evident in its $96 million earnings from IMAX screens alone.

Factors Behind Success

According to Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, the premium formats significantly drew audiences to “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” “Despite price sensitivity among consumers, demand for premium viewing experiences highlights the film’s strong appeal,” he stated.

Other Top Films

Disney’s “Zootopia 2” secured the second spot with $20 million, reflecting a 35% increase from the previous weekend. This film has grossed $1.4 billion worldwide and is the second highest-grossing movie of the year. Dergarabedian praised “Zootopia 2” by stating it received the “Most Valuable Player” award for the holiday season.

  • 3rd Place: “Marty Supreme” – A24’s comedy-drama featuring Timothée Chalamet, earned $17.5 million.
  • 4th Place: “The Housemaid” from Lionsgate Films made $15.4 million.
  • 5th Place: Sony’s reboot “Anaconda” grossed $14.5 million.
  • 6th Place: “David” by Angel Studios topped $12.69 million.
  • 7th Place: “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” took in $11 million.
  • 8th Place: “Song Sung Blue” opened at $7.6 million.

Year-End Box Office Insights

This weekend marks the best Christmas week box office performance since 2020, according to Shawn Robbins of Fandango. With several major releases performing well, expectations have been met or exceeded, a rarity in the post-COVID era. The overall domestic box office revenue for 2025 has reached $8.76 billion, a 1.56% increase from last year but still shy of the $9 billion achieved in 2023.

Despite these promising numbers, 2025 remains below the pre-pandemic earnings of over $11 billion in 2019. However, successful films released in December may lead to a vibrant start for 2026. Dergarabedian estimates that an additional $100 million could be added to this year’s total by year-end.

Looking Ahead

Exciting releases are set for the upcoming year. Highlights include:

  • “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” – April 3
  • “Disclosure Day” – June 12
  • “Toy Story 5” – June 19
  • “Avengers: Doomsday” – December 18
  • “Dune: Part Three” – December 18

The film industry is gearing up for what could potentially be its best year since the pandemic, driven by a strong lineup of anticipated releases.
