On Christmas Day alone, 4,606 people submitted their Self Assessment returns. This suggests that for some, completing tax returns is becoming a holiday custom. The peak filing times were notably busy, especially on Christmas Eve.

Filing Breakdown by Day

  • Christmas Eve (24 December): 22,350 returns filed, with the highest activity occurring between 11:00 and 11:59, when 3,159 submissions were received.
  • Christmas Day (25 December): 4,606 returns filed, peaking at 13:00 to 13:59 with 359 returns.
  • Boxing Day (26 December): 10,479 returns filed, the busiest hour being from 15:00 to 15:59, achieving 946 submissions.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is encouraging taxpayers who have not yet filed to act soon. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the importance of timely filing to alleviate year-end stress.

Benefits of Early Filing

Filing before 30 December provides several advantages. Taxpayers may be able to arrange payment through their PAYE tax code. Early submission also allows for better planning regarding payment options. HMRC’s app facilitates easy payment of Self Assessment bills and offers reminders.

Help is readily available online, including instructional YouTube videos, webinars, and step-by-step guidance for filling out tax returns. For various payment methods, customers are encouraged to search for “Pay your Self Assessment tax bill” on GOV.UK.

Changes in Tax Procedures

Furthermore, the introduction of the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) allows Child Benefit claimants in Self Assessment to switch to payment via their tax codes. Eligible customers have until the filing deadline to deregister from Self Assessment if desired.

Notably, customers do not need to include Winter Fuel Payments from the 2025 fiscal period in their current tax returns. These payments will be adjusted in future filings.

Staying Safe from Scams

HMRC advises taxpayers to remain vigilant against scams and to never share their login information. Guidance on recognizing scams is available at GOV.UK.
