Following the freezing rain of Boxing Day, London has faced further challenges as heavy rain and strong winds swept through the area on Sunday. Cleanup efforts had barely concluded when the weather turned worse, prompting flood warnings and concerns about power outages.

Impact of High Winds and Flooding

London Hydro is on high alert as wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are predicted to continue through Monday. This has raised fears of additional outages, particularly due to the risk of frozen tree limbs falling onto power lines. Spokesperson Kathryn Arnot emphasized the need for preparedness.

Power Outages Update

  • On Boxing Day, London Hydro managed thousands of power outages.
  • At one point, over 70 active outages were reported in London, Ontario.
  • This figure fluctuated, but by Saturday night, only 31 customers remained without power.
  • As of Sunday morning, that number further decreased, leaving just a few individual homes affected.

Hydro crews have been working diligently to restore power while handling approximately 300 trouble calls. They have coordinated efforts with the local fire department to ensure safe and efficient service.

Flood Warnings Issued

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) issued a flood warning due to expected rises in local streams, rivers, and ditches. Rainfall began on Sunday afternoon, with total accumulations anticipated to reach 30 to 60 millimeters, and temperatures remaining above freezing contributed to potential runoff.

Safety Precautions

Residents are advised to avoid flooded areas and refrain from driving through them. Additionally, children and pets should be kept away from watercourses as conditions remain hazardous.

  • Peak river levels are expected Sunday night.
  • Thames River levels will remain elevated throughout the week.
  • Stream banks may be slippery, and any ice cover is unstable.

The community is urged to take precautions and stay informed as cleanup efforts continue amid high winds and flooding challenges.
