A significant winter storm is currently impacting the northern United States, producing heavy snow, rain, and strong winds. This system is on course to develop into a “bomb cyclone” affecting the Great Lakes and Northeast. According to forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, bomb cyclones occur when major storms intensify rapidly, typically within 24 hours, due to the interaction between cold and warm air masses.

Forecast for the Great Lakes and Northeast

This winter storm began sweeping across the Great Lakes and is moving toward the Northeast. It is expected to bring severe weather conditions, including blizzard conditions, lake-enhanced snow, and high winds. CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan indicated that an icy mixture of freezing rain could also form. After the initial snow, light rainfall is anticipated on Tuesday morning.

Areas Affected

Several major metropolitan areas are in the storm’s path, including:

  • Green Bay
  • Chicago
  • Detroit
  • Indianapolis
  • Pittsburgh
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Philadelphia
  • New York City
  • Boston

Some of these regions could receive significant snowfall, with totals ranging from 6 to 10 inches by Tuesday. In New England, certain interior locations might experience ice accumulation nearing one inch, while areas further south could see up to 2 inches of rainfall. Wind gusts are also expected to reach up to 75 mph in some locations.

Impact and Alerts

Cold air is projected to follow the arrival of the cold front, leading to lake effect snow in Michigan and upstate New York. Some areas may see snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet. Meanwhile, regions beyond the Great Lakes are anticipated to receive between 1 to 6 inches of snow. Areas as far south as Kentucky and West Virginia are expected to experience lower snowfall totals.

Currently, millions remain under various winter weather alerts, including:

  • Blizzard warnings in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
  • Ice storm warnings in upstate New York and Vermont

Additionally, a multitude of winter storm warnings are active through Tuesday in several areas, extending from Wisconsin to Maine. High wind alerts affect over 114 million people across the eastern United States as the storm continues its eastward progression.
