Chip Kelly Joins Big Ten as Offensive Coordinator
Chip Kelly, the renowned former head coach of UCLA and Oregon, is set to rejoin the Big Ten as an offensive coordinator. Northwestern University has officially announced that Kelly will take on this role under head coach David Braun.
Chip Kelly’s Experience and Reputation
Kelly has established himself as one of football’s most innovative offensive minds. During his tenure at Ohio State, he contributed to a national championship win and ranked among the top 15 in scoring offense. His successful track record continued at UCLA, where his teams led the Pac-12 in scoring during both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Transitioning Back to College Football
After leaving Ohio State, Kelly transitioned to the NFL as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks under Pete Carroll. Unfortunately, his NFL stint ended following a challenging 2-9 start, leading to his dismissal in late November.
Northwestern’s Offensive Strategy Shift
At Northwestern, Kelly replaces Zach Lujan, who parted ways with the program as the Wildcats struggled to maintain an effective offense. Last season, Northwestern averaged slightly over 23 points and less than 350 yards per game, ranking near 100th nationally.

As Kelly assumes his new role, Northwestern is also preparing to open a new Ryan Field next season. This new facility, estimated to cost approximately $850 million, is located along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan.
