Why Do European Youth Gather Annually at the Taizé Meeting?
From December 28 to January 1, the 48th European Youth Meeting organized by the Taizé Community took place in Paris. This gathering attracted around 15,000 young people from over 50 countries. Participants came together to pray, sing, engage in discussions, and seek meaning in their lives under the theme, “Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth,” initiated by Brother Roger nearly five decades ago.
Significant Events in Paris
The meeting was held across various churches in central Paris, including iconic sites such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, Sacré-Cœur Basilica, and the Church of Saint-Sulpice. Events also took place outdoors and in urban spaces, gathering youth in larger venues for evening prayers, such as Accor Arena.
A Message from the Pope
Participants received a special message from Pope Leo XIV, delivered through Cardinal Secretary of State. In his message, the Pope encouraged the youth not to shy away from asking, “What are you seeking?” This question encapsulated the essence of the gathering and invited participants to reflect on their paths with the assurance that Christ accompanies them in their search for life’s meaning.
The Value of Silence and Community
During evening prayers, young attendees sang songs in multiple languages, fostering a sense of unity. For Agnieszka, a student from Warsaw attending her third Taizé meeting, the experience was transformative. She expressed, “I am here to meet others and, above all, to encounter God.” Agnieszka also shared her excitement about visiting Paris, a long-held dream.
Personal Reasons for Attendance
Participants arrive for various reasons, often highlighting their spiritual needs. One high school student from the Zielona Góra diocese stated, “I came because I needed silence, community, and God.” She emphasized that daily prayers and interactions with peers from different nations offered her new perspectives on her faith and life.
Daily Program and Atmosphere
The event’s schedule included over 100 thematic workshops each afternoon, led by dozens of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Topics ranged from spirituality and intercultural dialogue to peace, ecology, and service to others. These workshops were free for registered participants.
Creating a Sense of Home
The atmosphere in Paris transformed as the city became a temporary home for young Christians. Beyond prayer, they participated in small group discussions, workshops, and shared meals, fostering connections among attendees. Jakub recalled his joy at finally attending the meeting after having missed past opportunities.

Residents of Paris and the Île-de-France region warmly welcomed participants into their homes, enhancing the event’s spirit of hospitality. Discussions among young people highlighted that this gathering was not just a series of prayers but a vibrant exchange of cultures, experiences, and personal stories, enriching their journey into the new year with a renewed sense of community and hope.
