Rideau Canal Skateway: 3.4 km Section Opens Wednesday
Ottawa’s winter festivities are set to kick off with the opening of a section of the Rideau Canal Skateway. A 3.4-kilometre stretch will welcome skaters starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2026. This portion runs between Somerset Street and the Bank Street Bridge, providing an iconic skating experience in Canada’s capital.
Skateway Opening and Seasonal Highlights
The National Capital Commission (NCC) announced that 2026 marks the 56th season for the Rideau Canal Skateway. Tobi Nussbaum, CEO of the NCC, expressed enthusiasm about the chilly weather enhancing the skating conditions. “We invite everyone to come out to the Skateway, embrace the festive spirit, and enjoy this uniquely Canadian moment,” he stated.
Current Conditions and Operations
Favorable cold weather in December has created suitable ice conditions for the skateway. The NCC anticipates that more sections will open soon, depending on evolving ice conditions.
- The Patterson Creek skating area will be closed this season for bridge rehabilitation.
- A temporary staircase is available near Monkland Avenue for alternative access.
