The National Capital Commission (NCC) has announced the opening of the Rideau Canal Skateway for its 56th season. This much-anticipated event will commence on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 8 a.m.

Rideau Canal Skateway Details

This year, a 3.4-km section will be accessible, starting from the Somerset West access point to the Bank Street Bridge. December’s cold weather has created optimal conditions for ice formation, allowing for an early opening of the skateway.

As the season progresses, more sections will open depending on the ice conditions. However, due to maintenance on the Patterson Creek bridge, that particular skating area will be temporarily closed. A new staircase has been installed near Monkland Avenue to assist skaters.

Visitor Tips for an Enjoyable Experience

To enhance your visit to the Rideau Canal Skateway, consider using the interactive map provided by the NCC. This resource offers valuable information such as:

  • Current ice conditions.
  • Access points with stairs and ramps.
  • Change rooms and washrooms.
  • Rental services for skates and equipment.

Rest areas and concession stands line the skateway, providing the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the winter scenery. Don’t miss trying the famous BeaverTails® pastries available at the Concord and Fifth entrances.

Walking Lanes to Enhance Your Visit

The NCC has reinstated popular walking lanes that stretch from Waverly to Bank and Lakeview to Dow’s Lake. These lanes will be open whenever the skateway sections are available and snow conditions allow. They provide a great way to enjoy the canal even when skating isn’t suitable.

Collaboration with Carleton University

The NCC is taking proactive steps to address climate change impacts on the Rideau Canal Skateway. In collaboration with Carleton University, strategies have been developed to enhance maintenance and the overall visitor experience.

Quotes from the NCC

Tobi Nussbaum, CEO of the National Capital Commission, remarked, “As a true winter capital, Ottawa offers an unparalleled cold season experience. We invite everyone to come out to the Skateway, embrace the festive spirit, and enjoy this uniquely Canadian moment in the heart of our nation’s capital.”

The NCC expresses its gratitude to contractors and vendors for their continued support, especially Access Storage–Cubeit for being the official provider of skateway storage.
