Understanding the Honors System
The British honors system has its origins in the Middle Ages. Initially, monarchs rewarded loyal subjects with land and titles. Today, it has evolved into a structured hierarchy of distinctions, conferred by the king based on government recommendations. The most coveted awards are knighthoods and damehoods, granting recipients the titles “sir” or “dame,” respectively.
Below these are three levels within the Order of the British Empire (from highest to lowest):
- Commander (CBE)
- Officer (OBE)
- Member (MBE)
This year, 1,150 individuals received honors. The announcement occurs biannually, typically on New Year’s and the king’s birthday, with formal presentations conducted by the king or other royal family members.
