New Year Celebrations Face Intense Cold as Temperatures Plunge to -25°C
As the New Year approaches, residents across Quebec must prepare for an intense cold snap. Temperatures are forecasted to plunge as low as -25°C in certain areas. This extreme weather will impact New Year celebrations, particularly for those planning to celebrate outdoors.
Frigid Temperatures Ahead for New Year’s Eve
In the capital city of Quebec, revelers should expect evening temperatures to drop to -19°C on December 31, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. The chill is expected to intensify overnight, with a minimum temperature of -25°C anticipated.
Conditions in Major Cities
- Montreal: Wind gusts up to 40 km/h will make it feel like -20°C during the day, dropping to -16°C at night. Expect a low of -21°C by January 1.
- Gatineau and Sherbrooke: Similar temperatures are expected, as much of Quebec will experience the same chilling conditions.
- Three-Rivers: This region will also be affected by the cold weather, impacting outdoor festivities.
Meteologist Serge Besner noted that while the temperatures are low, the winds will be lighter, offering a small measure of comfort for those venturing out. Despite the frigid climate, there is no major snowstorm anticipated in southern Quebec.
Winter Weather Alerts
On Tuesday, a winter storm warning was issued for parts of northern Quebec, including Baie-Comeau, Matane, Val-d’Or, and Chibougamau. These areas are expecting significant snowfall, with up to 25 cm of snow possible in regions like Sept-Îles and Port-Cartier.
Environment and Climate Change Canada warns that travel could be hazardous due to poor visibility and potential road closures. However, conditions may still be favorable for winter sports as light snow is expected rather than heavy snowfall.
The unique blend of severe cold and minimal snow means that New Year’s celebrations will require careful planning. Citizens are urged to dress warmly and stay informed of weather updates as they prepare to ring in the New Year.
