The Royal Netherlands Navy recently completed its inaugural participation in Exercise Sharpshooter, focusing on countering drone swarms. Conducted by QinetiQ, this training integrated both live and synthetic threats to simulate complex swarm attacks effectively.

Participation of HNLMS Evertsen

The Dutch air-defence frigate, HNLMS Evertsen, operated 20 miles off the Welsh coast for three days. During this time, it successfully tracked and neutralized various aerial and surface targets.

  • Engaged five aerial drones
  • Sank two Hammerhead unmanned surface vehicles

Exercise Objectives and Training Methods

Exercise Sharpshooter, held at MOD Aberporth, combined several advanced components. Live Banshee Whirlwind aerial targets and Hammerhead unmanned surface vehicles were used alongside virtual threats like cruise missiles and hostile aircraft.

Inzpire, a subsidiary of QinetiQ, crafted these threat scenarios to encourage defense of critical assets in contested environments. This holistic approach allowed participants to prepare comprehensively for real-world challenges.

Comments from Commanders

Commander Marcel Keveling of the Royal Netherlands Navy emphasized the significance of this training experience. He stated the immersion and realistic engagement boosted the crew’s readiness over several days. “This exercise exemplified the importance of training in today’s rapidly changing world,” he remarked.

Will Blamey, chief executive for UK Defence at QinetiQ, highlighted the importance of allied interoperability. “These exercises enable nations to operate collaboratively, sharing tactics to enhance overall readiness,” he said. He noted that blending live and synthetic training is crucial for maintaining battle readiness.

Future of Exercise Sharpshooter

Exercise Sharpshooter has been set to run throughout 2025. The Royal Navy’s HMS Dauntless previously participated in extensive anti-drone drills prior to its deployment with a UK Carrier Strike Group.

QinetiQ indicates this programme aligns with broader initiatives under the UK’s Long-Term Partnering Agreement, facilitating multi-domain test and training support across 16 locations nationwide.
