Highlander Hiking Event is back in Ras Al Khaimah for its fifth edition. Scheduled from February 6 to 8, 2026, the event is a partnership with the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA). Known for its breathtaking trails, the event invites outdoor enthusiasts to explore the landscapes of Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak.
Event Highlights and Participation
The 2026 Highlander edition follows a successful event in the previous year. In 2025, over 250 participants from 35 different countries took part, showcasing the global interest in adventure tourism in Ras Al Khaimah.
Trail Options for All Experience Levels
This year, hikers can choose from more than 90 kilometers of trails spread across the Hajar mountain range. The event offers three distinct trails tailored to various skill levels:
- Highlander Pegasus: A three-day challenge covering 37 kilometers, featuring a choice between the Wadi Latibah or Wadi Ghalilah trails for advanced hikers.
- Highlander Orion: A two-day, 25-kilometer journey designed for intermediate hikers, where participants carry their own gear for an overnight experience.
- Highlander Lyra: An accessible, one-day hike of 13 kilometers, ideal for beginners.
All hiking routes culminate at a shared finishing point for participants.
Cultural and Environmental Focus
The event not only emphasizes physical activity but also highlights Ras Al Khaimah’s rich cultural heritage. The trails traverse historic areas, offering a glimpse into the region’s past. Additionally, the Highlander camp program includes:
- Local cuisine
- Traditional music
- Guided wildlife awareness sessions
Commitment to Sustainable Tourism
Sustainability remains a core aspect of the Highlander event. Emphasizing the ‘Leave No Trace’ principle, organizers encourage hikers to minimize their environmental impact. This commitment supports the ongoing initiative to promote responsible tourism in Ras Al Khaimah.
The Highlander Hiking Event promises to be a remarkable outdoor experience, combining adventure with cultural exploration and environmental responsibility.
