As the New Year approaches, various services across Waterloo Region and Guelph will adjust their operating hours. Many local residents may need to plan accordingly due to these changes affecting waste collection, public transportation, and municipal services.

Waterloo Region Business Hours Update

In Waterloo Region, several services will observe altered hours during the New Year period. Administrative offices will close on January 1. All Grand River Transit (GRT) buses will operate on a winter holiday schedule until January 4. However, the MobilityPlus service will continue on January 1, though users must rebook their subscription trips in advance by calling 519-744-2241.

Waste Collection Changes

  • Curbside waste collection will be delayed by one day.
  • Thursday’s collection will move to Friday.
  • Friday’s collection will occur on Saturday.
  • Residents can set out double the amount of waste without extra charge.
  • No tags are required for additional waste bags.

Warming Spaces and Facilities

Environment Canada has predicted flurries and freezing temperatures leading up to New Year’s Day. Warming spaces will remain available on weekends and Thursday at the following locations:

  • 150 Main Street, Cambridge: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • 150 Frederick Street, Kitchener: 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • 298 Lawrence Avenue, Kitchener: Overnight warming space.
  • 6 Cambridge Street, Cambridge: Overnight warming space.

Municipal Facilities Closure

Kitchener City Hall will close for in-person services on January 1, 3, and 4. The outdoor rink at Carl Zehr Square will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., except for:

  • December 31: Open until midnight.
  • January 1: Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Community centers will have modified hours, with most facilities closed on New Year’s Day. The Aud will be closed, except for scheduled games on December 30 and January 1.

Guelph Business Hours Update

In Guelph, all municipal offices will be closed on January 1. Guelph Transit will also operate on adjusted schedules that day. Additionally, the city reminds residents of the one-day delay in waste collection due to the holiday.
