Iqaluit Delays New Year’s Eve Fireworks Due to Weather Conditions
Iqaluit has postponed its New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration due to adverse weather conditions. The city announced the decision on December 31, 2025, citing strong winds and unusually warm temperatures as the main factors.
Iqaluit’s Weather Conditions Prompt Postponement
The city recorded temperatures soaring to 5°C, which is atypical for this time of year. This warmth led to significant melting of snow across Iqaluit. Environment Canada issued warnings about winds that could reach between 90 km/h and 100 km/h, starting overnight and expected to last into Thursday morning.
Rescheduled Fireworks and Event Cancellations
- New Year’s Eve fireworks rescheduled to Friday at 8 p.m.
- Final night of indoor Christmas games cancelled.
Originally, the fireworks were planned for the evening of December 31. However, the challenging weather conditions prompted officials to relocate the event to the following Friday. The city also cancelled the Christmas games event scheduled for that same night at Cadet Hall.
Other Service Updates
In addition to the fireworks postponement, Iqaluit has temporarily suspended trucked water and sewage services until further notice. As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no update regarding the New Year’s Day candy toss event located outside Nakasuk Elementary School.
Residents and visitors are looking forward to the rescheduled fireworks display, hoping for more favorable weather conditions by then. The city encourages everyone to stay safe during the high winds and unseasonably warm temperatures.
