Atlanta is gearing up for a unique New Year’s celebration this year, featuring the innovative Countdown Over ATL. Traditional festivities are set to transform as the iconic Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta is replaced by a dazzling display of drones and synchronized fireworks.

Countdown Over ATL: A New Tradition

For the first time since 1989, the Peach Drop will not occur this New Year’s Eve. Instead, a spectacular digital drone performance will commence at 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday. This event culminates in a citywide fireworks display at midnight, ensuring that residents can enjoy the festivities from various locations throughout the city.

Mayor Andre Dickens on the Shift

Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens highlighted that this change is aimed at enhancing public safety and accessibility. “This year, we are reimagining our tradition with Countdown Over ATL,” he stated. By dispersing crowds throughout the city, the new model aligns with the city’s commitment to equity and community engagement.

Viewing Options for Residents

The digital peach drone display will be most visible in downtown and Midtown Atlanta. However, an additional drone show is planned for the northwest side of the city. Residents are encouraged to step outside, gather at local hotspots, or watch from their backyards to take part in the festivities.

Guidelines for a Safe Celebration

  • Pet Safety: Owners should keep pets indoors and ensure they have updated ID tags or microchips to prevent anxiety due to fireworks.
  • Sensory Sensitivities: Individuals sensitive to loud noises should consider using earplugs or relocate to a quieter indoor space during the display.
  • Public Safety: The fireworks display is managed by licensed professionals. Residents are advised to contact ATL 311 for general inquiries, rather than calling 911 for fireworks-related concerns.

General Information for Attendees

The synchronized fireworks will last approximately 12 minutes, offering an enchanting end to the year. Residents with obstructed views should explore local businesses that have rooftop access for an elevated vantage point.

This year, Atlanta welcomes the New Year with excitement and innovation through Countdown Over ATL. It promises a memorable celebration that embraces community spirit and safety across the city.
