Couple Welcomes New Year’s Baby Girl in Harlem at Midnight
New York City has celebrated the arrival of its first baby of the New Year 2026. A baby girl was born at exactly 12:00 a.m. at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem. The newborn weighs 7 pounds 2.8 ounces and measures 21.26 inches long.
Details of the New Year’s Baby Girl
The parents, Oumy Niang and Amadou Niang, are thrilled to welcome their fifth child. Interestingly, three of their previous four children were also born at Harlem Hospital. This occasion marks a significant moment for the Harlem community, as the first New Year’s baby traditionally born in Brooklyn’s Kings County Hospital has shifted to Harlem.
A Shift in Tradition
Last year, the first baby of 2025, the Crumbie twins, were born just a minute after midnight at Kings County Hospital. This year’s event breaks Brooklyn’s streak, highlighting the diversity of births throughout the city’s hospitals.
NYC Public Health System’s Role
The city’s public health system plays an essential role in maternal and newborn care. It encompasses 11 hospitals that collectively deliver thousands of babies annually. The services provided include:
- Prenatal care
- Labor and delivery services
- Family planning
- Comprehensive gynecology
- Women’s health
- Primary care for women across all life stages
New York City is dedicated to providing expert support to families during these crucial moments. The arrival of the New Year’s baby girl is not just a celebration for the Niang family, but also a testament to the city’s commitment to maternal healthcare.
