Yungblud Collaborates with The Smashing Pumpkins on ‘Zombie’
Yungblud has collaborated with the legendary rock band The Smashing Pumpkins on a new version of his song “Zombie.” This marks a significant moment, as it is the first time The Smashing Pumpkins have featured on another artist’s track in their illustrious career.
Collaboration Background
The partnership began when Yungblud crossed paths with Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins in July 2022. They were both involved in tributes honoring the late Ozzy Osbourne. Corgan first discovered Yungblud through a live performance video, impressed by his raw talent.
In a 2023 interview, Corgan expressed admiration for Yungblud, stating, “I can tell where he’s going, and if I’m right, we’ll be talking about him for the next 50 years.” He further likened Yungblud’s evolution to that of Elton John on his podcast, The Magnificent Ones. This inspired Yungblud to pursue the rock album he had envisioned.
About “Zombie”
- The song “Zombie” is Yungblud’s fastest-streaming solo single, surpassing 100 million streams to date.
- It serves as the third single from his fourth album, Idols, released in June.
- The song is deeply personal, written in memory of his grandmother, who struggled with alcoholism.
- Yungblud released an acoustic version of “Zombie” prior to the collaboration.
In remarks about their rendition, Corgan noted, “Yungblud’s star shines bright, so it’s been great fun to lend our zig-zag voice to his ‘Zombie,’ which he said was inspired by one of our own.” This new version is said to honor Yungblud’s original intent.
Upcoming Plans for Yungblud
A music video for the reimagined “Zombie,” directed by Charlie Sarsfield, has also been released. It features both Yungblud and The Smashing Pumpkins, creating an engaging visual experience for fans.
Yungblud is set to embark on his most extensive Australian tour yet, beginning next week at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. He has expressed his excitement about this tour, indicating “massive plans” for his Australian run.
