Katie Wilson was officially sworn in as Seattle’s mayor during a public ceremony at City Hall. The inauguration took place on January 2, 2025, starting at 10 a.m. Wilson’s ascendance marks her as the third woman to hold this position in Seattle’s history. She also becomes the fifth consecutive one-term mayor since the last time a mayor was re-elected in 2005.

Katie Wilson’s Election Victory

In the closely contested 2025 general election, Wilson secured 50.2% of the vote, edging out Bruce Harrell, who received 49.5%. The election, with a noteworthy turnout of 55%, resulted in a razor-thin victory margin of just 0.73%. This makes it the closest Seattle mayoral election by percentage since 1906.

Focus on Affordability and Homelessness

Wilson, who is 42 years old, emphasized her commitment to addressing the city’s affordability crisis, which includes housing and childcare costs. In a recent interview with CNN, she highlighted the pressing issue of homelessness, noting that Seattle has rates of unsheltered homelessness among the highest in the country.

  • Improving housing affordability
  • Tackling the homelessness crisis
  • Addressing the overall cost of living

“Families are searching for solutions to financial pressures,” Wilson stated. She expressed a hope that her initiatives would resonate with residents across various demographics, acknowledging that many families face significant challenges without support.

Wilson has appointed a diverse leadership team to oversee key city departments. Notable positions include:

  • Tanya Kim – Director of the Seattle Human Services Department (HSD)
  • Dwane Chappelle – Director of the Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL)
  • Angela Brady – Interim Director of the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT)
