Venezuela Arrests U.S. Citizens Amid Rising Tensions with America

Venezuela has recently intensified tensions with the United States by arresting American citizens. At least five U.S. nationals have been detained in the last few months, according to a U.S. official familiar with the situation.

U.S. Citizens Detained in Venezuela

Strategic Detentions

Among the recently arrested individuals is 28-year-old James Luckey-Lange from Staten Island, New York. His family last communicated with him on December 8, when he called from Venezuela. Since then, they have been unable to reach him.

Luckey-Lange is the son of Diane Luckey, known as Q Lazzarus, whose music featured in the film “The Silence of the Lambs.” After his mother’s passing in 2022, Luckey-Lange traveled extensively in Latin America, inspired by her journeys. He had plans to return to the U.S. on December 12 for a family cruise.

Family’s Struggles for Communication

Abbie Luckey, James’s aunt, expressed frustration over the lack of contact with the State Department. She considers the detention unjust and a political maneuver. “I feel powerless because I can’t even get anyone to acknowledge that my family member has been detained,” she stated.

Increasing Military Presence in Venezuela

The Venezuelan government has responded to U.S. actions by bolstering military presence around key oil facilities. Just last month, the CIA executed a drone strike on a Venezuelan port facility. This escalation has further strained relations between the two countries.

Despite accusations against Maduro regarding legitimacy and drug trafficking, U.S. officials have refrained from openly advocating for regime change. The Trump administration has implemented multiple sanctions against Maduro’s family members and targeted affiliated individuals.
