William Nylander did not participate in the morning skate on Saturday, confirming his absence from the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup. Head coach Craig Berube addressed the situation, expressing hope that Nylander’s recovery is progressing. Berube stated, “He’s progressing, and my hope is maybe he’s back with us Monday on the ice practicing.”

The 29-year-old forward has been sidelined since December 27 due to a lower-body injury sustained during a game against the Ottawa Senators. The injury occurred mid-game when Nylander tangled his stick with Senators defenceman Artem Zub.

Nylander’s Performance Before Injury

  • 14 goals in 33 games
  • 41 points total
  • Selected for Sweden’s Olympic roster

Maple Leafs’ Defensive Changes

In addition to Nylander’s absence, the Maple Leafs are making changes on defense. Philippe Myers will be replaced by Matt Benning. During the morning skate, Benning was paired with Simon Benoit, while Troy Stecher was moved to the top defensive pair alongside Morgan Rielly.

Benning, 31, has not played in the NHL since last season after being assigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. He was acquired last season in a trade involving Timothy Liljegren. This season, Benning has appeared in 16 AHL games, recording two goals and ten points.

Upcoming Match Against the Islanders

The Maple Leafs are scheduled to face the New York Islanders on Hockey Night in Canada. The game will start at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
