Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from her singles match against Naomi Osaka in the United Cup, as confirmed by team officials. Raducanu, who is currently facing fitness challenges, had been expected to play this match. The British team will now turn to other players to fill her spot.

Raducanu’s Recent Challenges

Since her stunning victory at the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has struggled with both form and fitness. In the past season, however, she achieved a milestone by completing 50 matches, ranking 29th in the women’s standings.

The 23-year-old began intensive pre-season training in Barcelona last month, guided by coach Francisco Roig. Physiotherapist Emma Stewart has also joined her team to support her recovery.

Impact on Team Performance

Despite Raducanu’s absence, Great Britain managed to secure a victory against Japan. The team will face Greece in another Group E match on Monday.

Match Details Against Japan

  • Billy Harris defeated Shintaro Mochizuki: 7-6 (7-4), 6-3
  • Katie Swan, Raducanu’s replacement, lost to Naomi Osaka: 7-6 (7-4), 6-1
  • In mixed doubles, Neal Skupski and Olivia Nicholls clinched victory: 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.

According to Tim Henman, Raducanu struggled with her foot injury at the end of last year but has shown significant improvement. He stated, “She’s been practising in London, focusing on static drills to aid her recovery.”

Looking Ahead

Henman noted that Raducanu’s participation in the upcoming match against Greece remains uncertain. The team will convene to evaluate her condition before finalizing the roster.

“The spirit has been so good since we arrived in Perth,” Henman remarked. He praised the team’s work ethic and camaraderie as outstanding.

As the team prepares for its next challenge, the focus will be on maintaining competitive spirit and supporting each other on and off the court.
