UK’s Leading Mobile Provider to End 3G Service After 20 Years

Beginning in the upcoming weeks, O2, part of Virgin Media O2, will completely shut down its 3G network. This change primarily affects a small percentage of users, as only two percent of O2’s mobile data usage is attributed to 3G.

Customers using 3G devices have already received notifications regarding upgrade options. Delaying the switch to newer devices with 4G or 5G technology could result in loss of web services.

York noted that while some areas might still briefly display a 3G signal into early 2026, the network will be fully discontinued soon. She urged anyone still using a 3G-only handset to upgrade promptly to avoid disruption.
