Chad Bumphis has been appointed as the new wide receivers coach for the University of Utah football program. This announcement was made by head coach Morgan Scalley on Sunday. Bumphis previously held the same position at Utah during the 2021-2022 seasons before spending the last three years at his alma mater, Mississippi State University.

Coach Scalley expressed enthusiasm about Bumphis’s return, noting his energy and passion for coaching. He stated that Bumphis is an exceptional recruiter and evaluator with proven teaching ability. Under Bumphis’s guidance, Mississippi State saw significant achievements in their wide receiver program.

Development of Key Players

  • Brenen Thompson: Achieved All-SEC honors in 2025, with 53 receptions for 948 yards and six touchdowns.
  • Kevin Coleman Jr.: Earned Third Team All-Conference honors in 2024 with 74 receptions for 932 yards.
  • Tulu Griffin: Led the team in receptions (50) and receiving touchdowns (4), setting a single-game record of 256 yards.
  • Zavion Thomas: Achieved over 500 yards with his breakout performance at Auburn.

Success with Utah Football

During his time with Utah in 2022, Bumphis’s wide receivers contributed to the team ranking fifth in the Pac-12 for both scoring and total offense. Notable performances included:

  • Devaughn Vele: 55 catches for 695 yards and five touchdowns.
  • Jaylen Dixon: 33 receptions for 344 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Money Parks: 26 catches for 414 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Britain Covey: 52 receptions for 514 yards and three touchdowns.

Background and Education

Bumphis began his coaching career at Iowa Wesleyan in 2016 and later served as a graduate assistant at Buffalo. In 2018, he joined Utah as a graduate assistant. Prior to coaching, he was an undrafted free agent who played for the Miami Dolphins and spent time with various teams in the NFL and the Canadian Football League.

Bumphis was a standout player at Mississippi State from 2009 to 2012, holding the record for receptions (24) and ranking high in career receiving yards. He graduated with a degree in communication in 2013 and was recognized as a Freshman All-SEC player in 2009.
