Tragic Accident Claims Life of Beloved Giraffe Born at Greenville Zoo
The Toronto Zoo has announced the untimely death of Kiko, a Masai giraffe originally born at the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina. Kiko passed away following a tragic accident on January 2, 2023.
Details of the Incident
Kiko, who was 13 years old, experienced a fatal incident after being allowed into a behind-the-scenes area of his habitat. While exploring, he became trapped while attempting to open a door.
Zoo staff responded quickly; however, Kiko panicked and sustained injuries that proved to be fatal. The delicate anatomy of Masai giraffes, characterized by a long neck and a fragile head, may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
Investigation and Legacy
Following Kiko’s death, his body has been sent to the University of Guelph for a comprehensive postmortem examination. The Toronto Zoo’s Health and Safety Services team will oversee the investigation and plans to release findings once complete.
Kiko played a crucial role in the Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program aimed at protecting endangered species. He fathered two calves, with a third expected in early 2026.
Conservation Status of Masai Giraffes
- Masai giraffes were classified as Endangered in 2018.
- Their population has decreased by nearly 50% over the past 30 years.
The tragic accident of Kiko highlights both the challenges zoos face in caring for delicate species and the importance of conservation efforts for endangered animals.
