Steven W. Bailey, known for his role as Joe the bartender on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has disclosed a significant health issue. He revealed on January 2 via a post on X that he has been living with Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting muscle strength.

Understanding Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome

Bailey described this condition as having greatly influenced both his personal life and professional career. He expressed that for over five years, he had kept his struggles private due to career concerns and uncertainty about his diagnosis. However, he has now decided to share his journey openly.

What is Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome?

According to the Mayo Clinic, congenital myasthenic syndromes are a group of rare disorders caused by genetic changes leading to muscle weakness, especially during physical activity. The condition typically affects muscles responsible for:

  • Eye and eyelid movement
  • Chewing
  • Swallowing

In Bailey’s case, he shared that basic movements like walking and using his arms have become challenging, and he now relies increasingly on a powered wheelchair. However, he remains committed to his acting career, noting that he can still perform limited movements on set.

Impact on Bailey’s Acting Career

Bailey has taken this step to shift his acting style to accommodate his condition. He commented, “Professionally, this is changing me as an actor.” He is adjusting to performing while using a wheelchair, indicating that he is ready for a new chapter in his career.

Hope for the Future

Despite the challenges, Bailey remains optimistic about his place in the entertainment industry. He stated that he is done hiding his condition and is eager to explore new opportunities, even amid his health struggles.

Bailey’s revelation comes in the wake of fellow “Grey’s Anatomy” actor Eric Dane announcing his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Dane has also acknowledged how this illness will influence his future roles, saying he’s grateful to continue working in any capacity.

Steven W. Bailey has appeared in various popular shows, including “Chicago Fire,” “You,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Most recently, he was featured in the film “Swiped” alongside Lily James.
