M6 Clifton Bridge Demolition Concludes, Motorway Reopens
The demolition of a concrete railway bridge over the M6 motorway has been successfully completed, allowing the road to reopen. This significant project was part of the ongoing enhancements to the West Coast Main Line.
M6 Clifton Bridge Demolition Concludes
The M6 motorway was closed between junctions 39 at Shap and 40 near Penrith over the weekend. This closure facilitated the demolition of the old bridge, which measured 130 meters in length (approximately 427 feet).
Future Works and New Structure
A new steel and concrete bridge weighing 4,200 tonnes will soon replace the demolished structure. Transport authorities have announced another planned closure of the motorway for 57 hours this coming weekend to accommodate the installation of the new bridge.
Project Impact
Christian Irwin, who serves as the Network Rail North West and Central director, described the demolition as a “mammoth task.” The project not only requires careful planning but also has caused temporary disruptions to local train services.
