CTA State and Lake Station Closes Monday for Rebuild Lasting Three Years
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will close the State and Lake station on Monday for a substantial renovation. This project is expected to last three years, with completion anticipated by 2029. The CTA has confirmed that various train lines will not stop at this station during the construction period.
Closure Details and Affected Services
The closures will impact the Green, Brown, Orange, Pink, and Purple line trains. Passengers using these services are advised to utilize the accessible stations at Washington and Wabash, as well as at Clark and Lake. The Red Line’s Lake subway station will remain operational throughout this period.

Construction Specifications
The construction began in earnest in August 2023 and introduces significant changes. Road restrictions, including limited access on Lake Street, will also take effect from Monday. Work hours will span from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with overnight operations scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to dismantle the existing structure.
Why a New Station?
The State and Lake station has been a crucial part of Chicago’s transit system since its establishment in 1895. The redesign aims to modernize the station, which features outdated amenities and limited space. Key updates will include:
- ADA-compliant elevators for better accessibility
- Wider platforms and enhanced entry/exit points
- Brighter lighting throughout the station
- A new glass canopy for improved aesthetic and visibility
Additionally, the city plans to remove structural columns to enhance vehicle clearance at street level. New sidewalk bump-outs will facilitate faster pedestrian crossings, addressing the area’s high foot traffic.
Budget and Funding
The estimated project budget has increased substantially, now totaling $444 million, up from an initial $180 million estimation in 2021. A significant portion, over 90%, is covered by federal funding.
Historical Significance
The State and Lake station ranks as the fifth-highest ridership station in the CTA network. Its location serves as a crucial interchange point in Chicago’s Loop. This renovation follows a trend of upgrades across the transportation system, including recent refurbishments at Red Line stations in Edgewater and Uptown, and the newly opened Damen station near the United Center.
