Barcelona is currently in negotiations to secure a loan deal for Portuguese defender João Cancelo from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. This move comes after requests from head coach Hansi Flick for immediate defensive reinforcements.

Negotiations for João Cancelo Loan

Discussions between FC Barcelona and Al Hilal have commenced, focusing on the financial aspects of the potential deal. The La Liga leaders are aiming for a loan arrangement, which would involve them covering a portion of Cancelo’s salary during his time at the club.

Cancelo’s Background and Recent Career

  • João Cancelo, 31, previously played for Barcelona during the 2023-24 season on loan from Manchester City.
  • In that season, he made 42 appearances across all competitions and netted four goals.
  • After his loan spell, he signed with Al Hilal in summer 2024 on a contract running until 2027.

Despite his commitment to Al Hilal, Cancelo is reportedly open to returning to a European club. Inter Milan is also reportedly interested in acquiring him, indicating a competitive market for the player.

Barcelona’s Defensive Needs

Coach Hansi Flick expressed optimism about adding a defender in January, especially after the injury setback of Andreas Christensen, who will be out for four months due to an ACL injury. Additionally, Ronald Araújo has been unavailable since November, complicating the team’s defensive lineup.

In their absences, Barcelona has relied on young defender Pau Cubarsí and converted left-back Gerard Martín as their primary central defensive pair.

Impact of Cancelo’s Signing

Bringing Cancelo back would significantly bolster Barcelona’s defensive options. His versatility allows him to play effectively as both a right-back and left-back. Furthermore, his presence could enable Jules Koundé to revert to his favored central defensive position, enhancing the team’s overall structure.
