IIHF President Luc Tardif Assures Olympic Hockey Tournament Despite Arena Delays
International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President Luc Tardif has expressed confidence in the upcoming Olympic hockey tournament, despite construction delays at the primary venue. As NHL players return to the Olympics next month, Tardif anticipates a “fantastic tournament.”
Details on the Olympic Hockey Tournament
The men’s hockey event at the Milan Cortina Games is set to commence on February 11, 2026, while the women’s tournament will begin earlier on February 5, 2026. Tardif assured that essential facilities, including the playing surface, practice areas, and dressing rooms, will be prepared in time for the event.
Construction Challenges at Hockey 1 Arena
Although the arena — referred to as Hockey 1 — may not meet all initial expectations, it will feature a seating capacity of 11,800. Tardif acknowledged that certain areas of the rink might not be fully completed by the tournament’s start date.
- Men’s Tournament Start: February 11, 2026
- Women’s Tournament Start: February 5, 2026
- Seating Capacity: 11,800
NHL’s Position on Player Safety
The NHL’s participation hinges on the safety of the ice. League officials, including Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, have threatened to withdraw players if safety concerns arise. Tardif plans to visit Italy with NHL and NHL Players’ Association officials for a critical test event at the rink.
This collaborative effort is aimed at ensuring everything meets safety standards well ahead of the Winter Olympics.
