Phil X, a Canadian guitarist, has carved out a significant role in Bon Jovi since joining the band in 2013. He replaced founding guitarist Richie Sambora and has since made notable contributions to the band’s sound. His journey to Bon Jovi was not straightforward; he spent years as a session guitarist before receiving the life-changing call.

Phil X’s Early Career

Before his tenure with Bon Jovi, Phil X toured with notable acts like Aldo Nova and recorded with the Canadian rock band Triumph in the early 1990s. He had previously encountered Jon Bon Jovi during a session in the early ’90s, setting the stage for future collaboration.

The Call That Changed Everything

In 2011, Bon Jovi faced challenges due to Sambora’s absence. Jon Bon Jovi needed someone to step in. He contacted producer John Shanks, who reached out to Phil X with an urgent request. Phil recalls, “It was like a total Mission: Impossible.”

On April 14, 2011, Jon Bon Jovi officially invited Phil to rehearse in New York. Phil was informed that his debut performance would be at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, with approximately 50,000 attendees. This pressure would prove transformative as Phil began to establish himself within the iconic band.

The Unexpected Trader Joe’s Call

Two years after his initial stint, Phil found himself in Trader Joe’s in 2013, grocery shopping when he received a surprising call from Jon Bon Jovi. Jon needed him to perform in Calgary that night. Phil humorously shared, “I kinda wanted to hold my phone up and go, ‘Jon Bon Jovi is calling!’”

Preparing for a Comeback

Jon informed Phil about new songs that had just been released and asked him to learn them quickly. Phil promptly stated that he needed a proper chance to prepare. This response showcased his professionalism and dedication to quality performance. Eventually, arrangements were made for him to fly to Calgary, but mishaps ensued as the plane malfunctioned, delaying his arrival.

The Path Forward

Phil’s role grew in importance following this call. Richie Sambora did not return, leading to Phil’s full-time position. He faced the daunting task of learning an extensive setlist for European tours, which often included over 25 songs. Phil X described the experience as “crazy” but rewarding, emphasizing the close-knit camaraderie within Bon Jovi.

  • Joined Bon Jovi: 2013
  • First Major Performance: New Orleans Jazz Fest, 2011
