Ibrahim Mahama, a renowned Ghanaian artist, has made significant strides in the global art scene. His innovative installations explore themes of labor, colonialism, and global trade, drawing from his rich cultural heritage. In 2015, Mahama gained international recognition at the Venice Biennale, where he showcased his compelling work titled “Out of Bounds.”

At the Venice Biennale in 2015, Mahama installed “Out of Bounds” in the Arsenale dockyards. This captivating piece featured stitched burlap sacks used for exporting Ghanaian cacao beans, knotted ropes, and metal tags. The immersive installation spanned a long medieval passageway, emphasizing issues such as exploitation and the legacies of colonialism.

In December 2023, he earned the top spot on ArtReview’s Power 100 list, making him the first African artist to achieve this honor. A Commitment to Community

Born in 1987 in Tamale, northern Ghana, Mahama grew up in a large polygamous family. His upbringing instilled in him the values of equality and communal support, directly influencing his artistic philosophy. Mahama consistently emphasizes collective efforts in his work, often using “we” instead of “I.”

Artistic Foundations and Collaborations

Mahama pursued his artistic education at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he cultivated a passion for creating meaningful art.
