The Nevada County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call at 2:19 p.m. today. The call, transferred from Washoe County’s 911 center, reported an avalanche involving a group of snowmobilers, with one individual unaccounted for.
Response Teams Mobilized
Approximately 45 emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with Truckee Fire and North Truckee Fire departments. However, a request for emergency helicopter support did not materialize.
- The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (NCSSAR) team was transitioning from a Placer County missing person case to address the avalanche situation.
- Additional assistance came from Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue.
- Rescue operations deployed three SnoCats, three snowmobile teams, and several ski teams.
Recovery Efforts
As responders worked, the missing snowmobiler was located buried under the snow. Fellow recreationists recovered him, but despite their lifesaving efforts, he did not survive. His identity will be released pending notification of next of kin.
