The Bali Provincial Government is set to enhance its tourism strategy by implementing financial screening for international tourists in 2026. This initiative aims to ensure that incoming visitors have sufficient financial resources, which is a key aspect of the quality tourism initiative.

Bali’s New Tourist Financial Screening Initiative

Bali Governor Wayan Koster announced this plan during a press conference in Gianyar. He stated that the financial capacity verification will involve checking the savings of tourists for at least three months prior to their arrival. This screening is part of a broader effort to promote quality tourism on the island.

Additional Screening Measures

In conjunction with financial assessments, the Bali government will also review tourists’ intended length of stay and planned activities. Koster emphasized the necessity of these checks for maintaining control over the tourism experience.

The governor noted, “When we travel to other countries, similar checks are applied, and we will implement the same approach.” This policy aligns with practices adopted worldwide to regulate tourism effectively.

Tourism Statistics and Trends

In 2025, Bali recorded a remarkable 7.05 million foreign tourist arrivals via air, plus about 71,000 through sea travel. This figure represents the highest tourist influx in Bali’s history, reflecting a rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

Challenges Facing the Tourism Industry

  • Bali has faced various challenges due to increased tourist numbers.
  • Environmental issues such as waste management, traffic congestion, and flooding have emerged.
  • Tourism business associations previously urged the government to reopen international tourism, leading to a surge in arrivals.

Governor Koster acknowledged that resolving these challenges requires time and patience. He stressed the importance of enhanced regulations and improved governance rather than solely blaming tourism for infrastructure problems.

Focus on Quality Over Quantity

Looking ahead, the Bali administration is committed to prioritizing quality tourism development. Although the central government has yet to establish targets for 2026 tourist arrivals, Koster believes it is vital to determine which foreign tourists should be allowed entry.

He stated, “It is important to ensure that visitors contribute positively, particularly to the tourism sector.” The focus will shift from merely increasing numbers to fostering a sustainable and quality tourism environment in Bali.
