Vietnam Demands Netflix Remove Film Over ‘U-Shaped Line’ Maps
The Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has taken action against Netflix regarding the film “Shine on Me.” On January 3, the ministry’s Cinema Department formally requested the streaming giant to remove the series from its platform.
Concerns Over U-Shaped Line Maps
The call for the removal was prompted by the film’s depiction of the controversial “U-shaped line” map. This map has been deemed inaccurate and a violation of Vietnam’s national sovereignty. The issue arises from specific instances in the series, particularly in episode 25, where the map appears between 32 minutes and 34 minutes.
Film Details and Ratings

After assessing the content, the department classified “Shine on Me” as a C-rated film, which is prohibited from distribution in Vietnam. This classification falls under Point d, Clause 1, Article 9 of the 2022 Law on Cinematography.
Compliance and Deadlines
The Cinema Department has mandated that Netflix remove the film by 9 p.m. on January 3, 2026. Furthermore, the streaming service must provide a report confirming the removal by 10 p.m. on January 4, 2026.
