Menin Era Commences in City & State New York
Council Member Julie Menin is set to become the next speaker of the New York City Council. Her election is scheduled for Wednesday, just a day after she rehearsed her victory speech in the council chambers. Unlike the recent mayoral inauguration, the upcoming meeting will not feature large crowds or festivities.
Julie Menin’s Election as Speaker
The City Council will officially vote to elect Menin, who represents Manhattan’s Upper East Side, as its speaker at noon. With a coalition formed since November, Menin has positioned herself as a moderate Democrat, outpacing more progressive candidates for the influential role. It remains uncertain if any members will protest her election, although such votes have occurred in the past.
New Leadership Team
A shift in leadership within the council’s central staff will accompany Menin’s election. She will announce her full team shortly after her election. Key appointments include:
- Miguelina Camilo as Chief of Staff
- Simone Jones as Deputy Chief of Staff
- Bhav Tibrewal as Chief Adviser
- John-Carlo Bautista in an advisory role
Camilo previously served as counsel to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, while Tibrewal’s political direction contributed to securing Menin’s speakership.
Challenges Ahead
As the new speaker, Menin will face immediate challenges, including dealing with former Mayor Eric Adams’ 19 vetoes. These vetoes cover various controversial bills, ranging from street vending licenses to housing initiatives. Menin has committed to reviewing these measures thoroughly and intends to lead the council in overriding certain vetoes as needed.
Focus on Timeliness
Another significant change Menin promises is increased punctuality for council meetings, which have a reputation for starting late. She stated, “Stated meetings will start on time,” emphasizing her commitment to respect the time of council members and constituents.
Menin’s upcoming term begins a new era in the New York City Council. As she adjusts to her leadership role, her decisions in the coming weeks will shape the legislative landscape of the city.
