Developer Celebrates 24/7 Music Video Channels with MTV Rewind
As MTV prepares to shut down its remaining 24/7 music video channels by the end of 2025, nostalgia for the iconic network’s golden age has inspired an exciting new development. Flexasaurus Rex, a passionate developer, has launched a web app named MTV Rewind, designed to celebrate the era when MTV primarily focused on music videos.
MTV Rewind: A Tribute to Music Video Culture
MTV Rewind currently offers 11 dedicated channels, each showcasing a unique collection of non-stop streaming music videos. These channels honor the rich history of MTV and include:
- Videos from MTV’s inaugural day in 1981
- A channel for MTV Unplugged performances
- A rap-focused music stream
- Decade-specific channels spanning the ‘70s to the ‘20s
- Popular shows like 120 Minutes and Headbangers Ball
A Comprehensive Music Collection
At present, MTV Rewind boasts an impressive library of over 33,000 music videos, providing users with more than two months of continuous music content. The platform’s database is powered by the Internet Music Video Database (IMVDb), with all videos sourced from YouTube.
Flexasaurus Rex expressed a sense of loss when MTV announced the closure of its music video channels, stating, “MTV was a cultural institution that changed music, fashion, and youth culture. I started coding immediately and built MTV Rewind in just 48 hours.”
Features of MTV Rewind
Each channel plays videos in a randomized order, allowing users to enjoy a varied experience. For those who prefer some control, a shuffle option is available, and users can skip songs that don’t resonate with them. The app even includes era-appropriate advertisements for an extra nostalgic touch.
Although MTV Rewind is not officially affiliated with MTV or its parent company, it embraces the brand’s legacy. There’s hope that the creative endeavor will continue to thrive without legal complications from Paramount, MTV’s parent company.
MTV Rewind serves as a delightful reminder of the past, rekindling the joy of music videos during a time when they defined the cultural landscape. As the end of an era approaches for traditional music channels, this innovative app offers fans a way to relive and celebrate the vibrant history of MTV.
