Flu activity is surging across the United States, signaling a significant return of influenza this season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu-related medical visits have reached a record high, marking the first time since 1997 that 8% of such visits are related to the flu or similar illnesses.

Nationwide Flu Statistics

As of December 27, reports indicate a staggering 48% increase in hospitalizations, bringing the total to 120,000, with 5,000 deaths attributed to the virus. This year’s flu season displays unprecedented activity, with just under 33% of flu tests returning positive during a single week, a sharp rise from 9% earlier in December.

Regional Flu Hotspots

  • States with positivity rates over 45%: Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
  • Regions categorized as having “very high” flu activity include parts of the Northeast, particularly New York and Massachusetts.

Emergence of the Subclade K Strain

A new mutation, known as subclade K, has been identified as a driving force behind this season’s flu surge. Originating from the influenza A virus, this variant poses challenges for existing immunity and vaccine effectiveness.

Vaccine Effectiveness Against Subclade K

While the current flu vaccine may not be fully effective against subclade K, preliminary data supports its continued protective qualities. The CDC noted that 91% of flu cases tested within a designated timeframe were caused by H3N2, with subclade K accounting for 90.5% of those viruses.

Symptoms and Prevention

Common flu symptoms to be aware of include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches and chills

The CDC emphasizes washing hands thoroughly as one of the most effective methods to prevent the flu and other contagious diseases. Proper hand hygiene involves washing with hot, soapy water for at least 20 seconds, especially before meals and after using the restroom.

The Importance of Vaccination

Vaccination remains the best defense against severe influenza outcomes. Health authorities recommend that everyone over six months should receive the flu vaccine, barring specific medical contraindications.

As flu season advances, staying informed and taking preventive measures is critical to safeguard individual and public health. Continued monitoring by health agencies will play a vital role in addressing the evolving flu landscape this winter.
