The Television Academy will introduce a new Emmy award called the Legacy Award. This announcement marks the first addition of a major Emmy in nearly two decades. The Legacy Award aims to recognize television programs that have made a significant and lasting impact on audiences.

Eligibility Criteria for the Legacy Award

To qualify for the Legacy Award, shows must meet specific requirements:

  • Have a minimum of 60 episodes over at least five seasons.
  • Demonstrate sustained relevance and influence within the television landscape.

Franchise properties will be evaluated collectively for the award. Programs no longer airing, such as All in the Family and Will & Grace, are eligible. Ongoing series like Grey’s Anatomy and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will also be considered.

Nominations and Selection Process

Nominations for the Legacy Award can be made by members of the Television Academy’s board of governors and the special awards committee. Additionally, industry professionals and the public may submit nominations through letters.

Annual selections will be made by the committee now known as the Special Awards Committee. This committee was previously referred to as the Governors Award Committee. The recipients will receive an engraved Emmy statuette.

Award Presentation Details

The Legacy Award may be presented during various events, including:

  • The Primetime Emmys telecast.
  • The Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies.
  • The TV Academy’s Televerse festival.
  • Its Hall of Fame ceremony.

The choice of event for the presentation will be determined annually by the Television Academy.

This new initiative underscores the Academy’s commitment to honoring programs that continue to impact society, culture, and the television industry. The Legacy Award is expected to recognize both past classics and current influential shows.
