Birmingham City Council Auctions Prime Land Opposite Airport
Birmingham City Council is moving forward with an auction for a prime piece of land situated opposite Birmingham Airport. The council has enlisted Bond Wolfe to oversee this sale as part of its strategy to manage a budget shortfall by liquidating assets from its investment portfolio valued at £2.4 billion.
Birmingham City Council’s Asset Disposal
This initiative involves reducing the council’s landholdings, a process regulated by government-appointed commissioners. At its peak, Birmingham City Council was the largest landowner among UK local authorities, controlling approximately 26,000 acres and over 6,500 properties, generating an annual income of about £34 million.
Details of the Auction
The land parcel available for sale is approximately 0.57 acres, located at the junction of Coventry Road and Clock Lane in Bickenhill. The site is being offered on a freehold basis and is irregularly shaped. Due to its proximity to Birmingham Airport’s runway, it presents various potential uses.
Potential Uses for the Land
Gurpreet Bassi, Chief Executive of Bond Wolfe, has highlighted the site’s versatility:
- Residential development, subject to planning consent
- A small car park
- Potential for a pub, similar to offerings near Manchester Airport
This plot will be auctioned on Wednesday, February 5, with a starting guide price of £300,000 or higher. Given its location and prospective amenities, the land is expected to attract significant interest.
