The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has unveiled a new data platform that provides enhanced insights into the federal workforce. This major update, which launched on January 8, 2026, aims to improve transparency and the frequency of updates regarding federal employment statistics.
Key Features of the New OPM Data Platform
The revamped platform replaces the older FedScope system, which had been criticized for outdated data management. The new website enables users to access and filter comprehensive workforce data by various parameters, including:

- Agency
- Age
- Education level
- Bargaining unit status
Workforce Trends and Statistics
The latest data reveals significant changes in federal workforce dynamics. Notably, as of January 2026, government staffing levels are reported to be at their lowest in a decade. The OPM data indicates a reduction of over 300,000 federal employees in the previous year, leading to a net loss of approximately 220,000 federal employees since January 2025.
In addition to these staffing changes, the data highlights a striking decrease in union representation among federal employees. Union membership has fallen from around 56% to 38% in just one year, attributed to the administrative changes under former President Donald Trump. Telework hours also reportedly declined by 75% from January to October 2025, following new on-site work mandates initiated by the former administration.
