Bear Evicted After Months Under Altadena Home
A bear residing under an Altadena residence for two months has been successfully evicted. Known as Yellow 2120, this bear made a home in the crawl space beneath a kitchen and was first discovered around Thanksgiving.
Eviction Efforts in Altadena
The homeowner, Ken Johnson, reported that the bear was last seen on a Wednesday. Professionals employed an electrified doormat to capture the animal, which led to its surprising exit. The bear began to wander around, only to find its exit blocked.
The Bear’s Behavior and Removal
- The bear weighs approximately 550 pounds.
- Previous attempts to stimulate the bear’s departure involved using paintballs.
- Ken Johnson described hearing loud noises from beneath the house, which were unsettling.
After unsuccessful attempts by state wildlife officials, The Bear League, a nonprofit from Lake Tahoe, intervened. Dave Fleishman of The Bear League noted that they frequently manage similar situations and were able to assist Johnson, who had considered legal action against the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Their expertise proved crucial in the bear’s removal.
In a swift operation, the bear exited the crawl space in less than ten minutes after the removal team arrived, much to Johnson’s relief. “He looked very relieved when we walked up,” Fleishman remarked.
Post-Removal Situation
As of Thursday afternoon, the current location of Yellow 2120 remains unknown. The swift and efficient removal has ensured the safety of both the bear and the residents of Altadena.
