NHL, Panthers Reveal Synthetic Ice Rink for Winter Classic Legacy
The SLAM Miami school has unveiled a synthetic ice rink as part of the legacy initiative for the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic. This rink marks the introduction of hockey as an athletic option at SLAM, which focuses on sports-related majors for students in grades 6 through 12.

Founded in 2012 by Armando Christian Pérez, known as ‘Pitbull’, SLAM Miami aims to prepare students for post-secondary education. Carlos Alvarez, Principal of SLAM Miami, expressed gratitude to the NHL for its support in expanding hockey access within the community.
Partnership with Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers are instrumental in the implementation of hockey programming at the school. This initiative allows students to learn skating and hockey year-round on the new outdoor synthetic ice rink. The synthetic ice provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional ice, simulating the real experience without extensive maintenance.

Previously, students were announced the gift of the synthetic rink in a pep rally, during which they received tickets to witness Florida’s first-ever outdoor hockey game.
Growing Youth Hockey Participation
During the Winter Classic, nearly 100 SLAM Miami students attended the record-setting event. Kim Davis, NHL Senior Executive VP of Social Impact, noted the surge in youth hockey participation in Florida, highlighting the importance of affordable ice access.
